Says Who? Seriously

Why are people so up in arms over December 21, 2012?  The Mayans lived thousands of years ago.  Of course their calendar has a finite end .... to them it was thousands of years in the future.  And since we know the earth has a funny way of "resetting" itself via ice ages and such, how do we know that particular date isn't just the "reset point"?  How do we know they didn't just simply run out of stones?  Or, maybe they got tired and figured that was far enough in the future for them to create their calendar, it was time for lunch, they got busy with other necessities, then just never got back around to adding to it.  Honestly, anyone who sells off all their belongings and sits in a cave waiting for the end to come is simply absurd.  Regardless of whether its doomsday or not, why would anyone want to waste the possible final waking moments of their life focusing completely on something as horrid and negative as Dread?  Wouldn't those moments be put to much better use doing things with or for those who bring joy into your life?  Or even doing simple mundane things alone that bring about joy of some form?  The humans who waste perfectly good energy freaking out over something so finitely negative that may or may not occur on a specific date that may or may not be correct completely baffle me .......
